Doesn’t mind facing tough challenges off or on the ice

Andrew Ference is a former Calgary Flame who is now a defenseman for the Boston Bruins.

An avid environmentalist, Andrew spearheaded the NHLPA's Carbon Neutral Challenge. Now NHL players offset the carbon emissions they create, traveling from city to city, with Gold Standard Credits, which puts money back into renewable energy projects. Andrew also encourages recycling bins in locker rooms, the use of public transportation and can often be seen riding his bike to the rink.

"People definitely have a massive vote with their wallets as to which companies they support and with their votes as to who they're putting into office locally and nationally."

Hello Andrew!!

The Green Heroes Team would like to congratulate you for your wonderful achievements on the ice!! Winning the Stanley Cup is a lifetime accomplishment and we were thrilled to see the Boston Bruins take it! This is a dream that you have been pursuing for many years now, it came close in 2004, and yet you had to keep fighting for it. Perseverance, patience and determination are not easy to live with every day, but they are what got you to where you are today. You and your family must be so proud! Please pass on our congratulations to them as well.

All the very best and congratulations again!!

I wish all of our sports stars were so aware of environmental issues. They really have a lot of pull and can do some good - especially with youth!

Bravo! I love the way Andrew Ference takes the "macho" notion of respect, typically missing from the green movement, and turns it on its ear to illustrate the positive effect it can have on environmentally sustainable behaviour.
